PC's for Teacher Training Colleges
Project: Collecting quality used PC's in Holland for Teacher Training Colleges in Tanzania.
Objective: Ensuring the availability of basic requirements for computer education at teacher training colleges.
Approach: Promoting, collecting, testing, cleaning and packaging quality used PC's in Holland in cooperation with Arpa Intrabouw BV, Computers for Development and Centric. Arranging shipping to our partner ADEM in Tanzania that has a central function within the network of 42 TTC's and takes care of collection by TTC's and maintenance support.
An impression of the project so far:
2004-2005
In October 2005 a 40 ft container left for Tanzania, Bagamoyo, carrying approximately 340 Pentium 1, 2 and 3 computers, 50 digital camera's, 20 laptops en 20 laserprinters.
Many trips across Holland were necessary to collect the PC's that people and organisations offered us, after they had found our project through our website. Software company Arpa Intrabouw supplied free storing space, where we collected over 140 PC's during the year.
Arpa's personnel and other friends luckily also supplied the necessary muscle activity to move the equipment: 140 PC's and 160 monitors first up and then down the second story of the office building.
We used two hired vans to move all th equipment to Amsterdam for testing and cleaning.
For testing and shipping we found a partner in the Dutch foundation Computers for Development, that maintains good contacts with schools where students receive practical IT-education: They learn by testing and assembling used PC's. The result: out of 140 systems they created 110 well-functioning complete systems.
Thanks to Jamani Ambassador Alexander Snoeren from Centric Retail Solutions, we learned that Centric had another 230 PC's available for our project! Together with the transporter Mission and Relief all systems were put directly into the 40ft container.
The last stop was at Computers for Development in Amsterdam, where the 110 tested computers and monitors were added to the container. The remaining space was filled by Computers for Development with 60 additional computers for the 'Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania' (ELCT), after which the container went on to Rotterdam Harbour.
Soon we hope to show how the PC's reached their destination!
